Love this recording. It has some of the finest lyrics of any of their recordings, after Kid Charlemagne and the Royal Scam, of course. Too bad they moved back to the Big Apple, I think they had a lot more great work between the two of them.

This album came out in a good period of my life as I just picked up on its vibe immediately and loved it. I am a huge SD fan and yes, AJA is a bona fide classic hands down and of course there are the others in the catalog that are extraordinary but I find myself gravitate to Gaucho and the groove of the awesome tracks Time Out Of Mind, Glamour Profession, Hey Nineteen, and Babylon Sisters for starters with the title track, My Rival, Third World Man right behind with crisp sound quality off the charts!

First side ends “weakly” with Glamour Profession? Are you serious? One of my favorite Dan tracks, and perfectly captures the seediness of the drug underworld in L.A. The horns just ooze sleaze and cocaine.
